Paige Roller (she/her/hers), Girls Rugby Cincinnati, OH Program Manager

Tell us a little bit about yourself and a bit of your background
I’m from northwest Ohio and I moved here to Cincinnati six years ago to attend the University of Cincinnati. While at UC, I began playing rugby for the first time and fell in love with it. I ended up playing with UC for four years and I was able to watch the team grow significantly. After college, I began working in social services and I currently work with homeless youth. I also enjoy playing rugby with the Cincinnati Kelts, going to parks around the city, trying new coffee shops, and traveling when I can.

Why did you want to work with Girls Rugby?
My first experience with Girls Rugby was as a coach in 2019. I have always enjoyed working with youth and creating community, and the Girls Rugby program lets me do both. I appreciate how the curriculum empowers girls to be physically active and critical thinkers.

Why is empowering young girls important to you?
Our society often forces girls to be passive and subdued, which can limit their potential. A community functions best when everyone can be a part of it and speak their mind. The girls that we’re coaching are going to be leaders some day, and it is important that they can pursue anything they want. I want to ensure that they are confident in their passions, their hobbies, and themselves.

What is an important value that you think is essential for girls to learn?
It is essential for girls to learn community. They should know that the people they surround themselves with are important and they deserve to be treated with respect and encouragement. Rugby is a great place to learn the value of community.

What are you most looking forward to with the upcoming season?
I’m looking forward to seeing the progress that the coaches and I can make with the players and to expanding the Girls Rugby program in Cincy.

What’s a fun fact about yourself?
I have a 13-year-old dog named Miley.
